What is the difference between standard, partial and temporary dentures?

Standard Dentures:

Standard dentures, also known as complete dentures, are designed to replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower arch or both. They are used when a patient has lost all of their natural teeth. These dentures are removable appliances that are custom-made to fit the individual's mouth. Standard dentures rest on the gums and are typically held in place by suction or denture adhesives. They provide the patient with the ability to chew, speak, and smile with a natural-looking set of teeth.

Partial Dentures:

Partial dentures are used when a patient still has some natural teeth remaining in their mouth. They are designed to fill the gaps created by missing teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting. Partial dentures consist of a metal or acrylic framework that supports the replacement teeth. The framework attaches to the remaining natural teeth using clasps or other connectors. Partial dentures are also removable and can be taken out for cleaning and maintenance.

Temporary Dentures (Immediate Dentures):

Temporary or immediate dentures are provided to patients as a temporary solution while they wait for their gums to heal after tooth extraction. These dentures are fabricated in advance and can be inserted immediately after the extraction of the remaining teeth. Temporary dentures help protect the extraction sites and allow the patient to have functional teeth during the healing process. Over time, as the gums heal and shrink, adjustments or new dentures may be required to ensure a proper fit.

In summary, standard dentures replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower arch, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are still present. Temporary dentures are temporary appliances used immediately after tooth extraction until the mouth has healed.
